How to prepare for your newborn photo session
Planning for your newborn photo session can be a fun and exciting experience, but it’s important to prepare to ensure the session goes smoothly and you get the beautiful photos you’re envisioning. Here are some key steps to help you plan:
BOOK EARLY:
Newborn photographers often book up weeks or even months in advance, so it’s a good idea to book your session early, ideally when you’re in your second trimester. Most photographers prefer to schedule newborn sessions when the baby is between 7 and 17 days old, as babies are typically sleepier and more flexible at this age. We prefer to photograph around 10 days new. During this time, the baby is still very sleepy and we can mold them and put them in to all of the adorable poses that families have grown to love.
Choose the Right Photographer
Look for a photographer who specializes in newborn photography, as they have the expertise to handle your baby safely and know how to capture the most flattering angles. Review their portfolio to ensure their style aligns with your preferences (e.g., posed, lifestyle, natural). See more of our portfolio HERE
Session Packing List
We have many of the items you see on my website in the newborn portraits. I have a minor prop and outfit obsession and buy them whenever I see something I like. Thus I have on hand many organic outfits, wooden props, hats and other simple props. To personalize your session we recommend you the following:
- Blankets that are special to you (made by grandma, embroidered with baby name, matches nursery, etc.) hats or booties you love
- Fun personal items that represent a hobby, favorite sports team, family heirlooms, etc. Some of the most amazing newborn portraits I have created were conceptualized during a conversation with my clients.
Timing
Plan for the session to last around 2-3 hours. The younger the baby the less likely chance we will need all 3 hours, but we still recommend it to avoid any stress. We like to leave plenty of time for extra feedings, diaper changes and bouts of crankiness.
No matter what your baby does, please know that I am always relaxed. I do this all the time and have seen everything. This session is supposed to be a special experience for you and I don’t want you stressed if the baby starts to cry. The baby can sense stress and it usually makes them cry more. I have plenty of time allowed for your session. If we need to take a break to feed, walk, rock, etc. we can do that. We want you to enjoy the experience of your session and this special bonding moment for your family.
